Admin Tool Data Management

From the FPMA Admin tool, data processing operations can be carried out primarily in the Series and Prices menu items. The CPIs and FxRates menu items are crucially important for price data management and should be updated regularly to ensure accurate visualization of real and USD values in the Price Viewer.

Series

fpma.fao.org

The FPMA Tool automatically categorizes all price data points into their respective price series and assigns a unique identifier (UUID) to each series.

The Series Browser presents a list of all the series contained within the database, with each one distinguished by a unique combination of the following parameters: ISO3 country code, periodicity, market name, commodity name, source name, price type, currency, measure unit, last price, remote status, active status, country name, and UUID. Refer to Field Names and Descriptions for more information.

The Series Browser provides a user-friendly method to locate the UUID of each series, essential for developing solutions that access FPMA data via an Application Programming Interface (API). Additionally, the Series Browser table's contents are available for download.

Users can access the following functions from the Main Navigation Bar of the Series Browser:

  • Recalculate - This function enables users to perform calculations related to Periodicities, Real Prices, and United States Dollar (USD) prices across the entire database or for selected series within specified time frames.
    • Recalculate Periodicities - This feature aggregates data into higher-level periods (e.g., calculating monthly average price values from weekly or daily observations, and weekly price values from daily observations).
    • Recalculate Real Prices - This feature computes real price values using the nominal price value and the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI).
    • Recalculate USD Prices - This feature converts nominal price values into USD equivalent prices using the corresponding monthly U.S. dollar exchange rate (FxRates) for a specific currency.
  • Reload - This function allows users to view updated query results after certain tasks have been executed.
  • Delete - This function permits users to remove selected series and all related price observations from the database.
  • Export Options - This feature provides users with the ability to export selected series in three different formats: CSV, Excel, or PDF. Users can download the selected series, the series that meet filter criteria, or all series.

The Recalculate function provides three choices:

fpma.fao.org

  • Trigger Calculation only performs calculations for newly created records.
  • Reset Calculation clears all prior calculations for the chosen records.
  • Reset & Recalculate clears previous calculations and conducts new ones for these records.
Note

Users must define the time frame for calculations relating to real and dollar prices.

Prices

fpma.fao.org

The Prices menu item displays the list of all price data points stored in the database.

Every price record includes the following information: ISO3 country code, price type, periodicity, market name, administrative unit 1, commodity, currency, date, price value, dollar price value, real price value, measure unit, source name, calculated, collected, min, max, and ID. Refer to Field Names and Descriptions for more information.

The Main Navigation Bar provides users with access to the following functions:

  • Upload CSV Price - enables bulk uploading of price data. To use this function, click on the Upload CSV Price icon, which will open the CSV upload window.
  • Reload - enables users to view updated query results once specific tasks have been completed.
  • Delete - enables the user to remove selected market records from the database.
  • Export Options - enables users to export selected price series in three different formats: CSV, Excel, or PDF. Users can download either the selected series, those that match certain criteria, or all records.
Note

For selected price series with data spanning multiple pages, users will need to navigate to each page to perform data export operations. Data export is only permitted for the currently visible page.

CPI

fpma.fao.org

The CPI menu item provides a list of all Consumer Price Index (CPI) records stored in the database. The CPI measures the average price change over time for a basket of consumer goods and services and is used in the computation of real price values in the FPMA Tool. CPI figures are updated monthly.

To guarantee the uniqueness of data in the CPI table, a constraint exists: a unique combination of the ISO3 country code and the Period. Consequently, attempting to create a new CPI record with an identical ISO3 country code and Period as an existing one will result in an error message.

Each CPI record includes the following information: ISO3 country code, descriptor, period, value, and ID. Refer to Field Names and Descriptions for more information.

The Main Navigation Bar provides users with access to the following functions:

  • Create CPI - enables users to add new CPI entries by inputting information directly into the system. A dialog box appears, providing the necessary fields for CPI addition, with mandatory fields indicated by an asterisk (*).
  • Upload CSV CPI - facilitates the bulk uploading of CPI records. To use this feature, click on the Upload CSV CPI icon, which will open the CSV upload window.
  • Reload - refreshes the query results to reflect recent submissions of specific tasks.
  • Delete - permits users to remove selected CPI records from the database.
  • Visualize Chart - provides a graphical representation of the historical CPI data for individual countries. To utilize this feature, select the data for only one country and then click on the chart icon.
  • Export Options - allows users to export selected CPI records in three formats: CSV, Excel, or PDF. Users can download the series they have selected, those that meet specified criteria, or all records.
Note

Updates to CPI records will not be immediately reflected in the related real price records. Updated records will only become available after overnight calculations are completed or by triggering the recalculate real prices function under the Series Browser.

FxRates

fpma.fao.org

The FxRates menu item contains the list of all the USD exchange rate records stored in the database. The FPMA Tool facilitates price comparison by utilizing the U.S. dollar as the benchmark currency. It reports the values of exchange rates on a monthly basis.

To guarantee the uniqueness of the FxRates, there is a constraint based on a combination of the ISO3 country code and Date. Consequently, attempting to create a new FX record with an identical ISO3 country code and Date as an existing one will result in an error message.

Each FxRates record includes the following information: Nominal currency code, reference currency code, periodicity, date, value, and ID. Refer to Field Names and Descriptions for more information.

The Main Navigation Bar provides users with access to the following functions:

  • Create FxRate - enables users to add a new FxRate by inputting information directly into the system. A new dialog box appears, containing specific fields required for the new FxRate entry. Fields that are mandatory are marked with an asterisk (*).
  • Upload CSV FxRate - facilitates the bulk uploading of FxRate records. To use this function, click on the Upload CSV FxRate icon, which will open the CSV upload window.
  • Reload - permits users to view updated query results after certain tasks have been executed.
  • Delete - allows users to remove selected FxRate records from the database.
  • Visualize Chart - enables the graphical representation of historical FxRate data for individual countries. To utilize this function, select the relevant data for only one country, and then click on the chart icon.
  • Export Options - offers the ability to export selected FxRate records in three formats: CSV, Excel, or PDF. Users can download either the selected series, those that meet specified criteria, or all records.
Note

Updates to FX records will not be immediately reflected in the related USD price records. Updated records will only become available after overnight calculations are completed or by triggering the recalculate USD prices function under the Series Browser.
